Portable Wheelchair Ramps: No-Permit Solution
Updated June 2025 — How to size and choose the right ramp
When Portable Is the Right Answer
Portable and modular ramps are the fastest, most affordable, and least bureaucratic accessibility modification available. They require no permit in any U.S. jurisdiction, no structural modification to your home, and can often be ordered online and installed within a day. They are the right solution for: rises of 24 inches or less; rental situations where the ramp must be removed; temporary needs; and budget-constrained situations where a permanent ramp is a future goal.
Sizing: The Only Measurement That Matters
Correct sizing comes down to one calculation: rise × 12 = minimum ramp length in inches. A 6-inch step rise requires at minimum a 6-foot ramp (72 inches). For easier self-propelling, use a 2:1 ratio (6-inch rise = 12-foot ramp).
Also measure the width of the doorway — the ramp must fit within it. Standard ramp widths are 26–36 inches. For power wheelchairs, 30–36 inch ramp width is recommended.
Types of Portable Ramps
| Type | Best For | Length Range | Cost Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threshold / door threshold ramp | Transitions under 4 inches | 2–6 inches | $20–$80 |
| Single-fold (suitcase) ramp | Rises 6–18 inches; easy portability | 3–8 feet | $150–$400 |
| Multi-fold ramp | Rises 12–24 inches; longer length folded small | 6–10 feet | $250–$600 |
| Roll-up ramp (track) | Rises 6–18 inches; lightweight; van/vehicle use | 4–8 feet | $200–$500 |
| Modular section system | Rises up to 36 inches; semi-permanent but removable | 4–20+ feet configurable | $800–$3,500 |
Weight Capacity
Always verify the ramp's rated weight capacity exceeds the combined weight of the user plus their wheelchair or scooter. Standard portable ramps are rated for 600–800 lbs. Bariatric-rated ramps go to 1,000+ lbs. Never exceed the rated capacity — ramp failure is a serious fall risk.
Modular aluminum ramp systems are typically secured to the home's landing or threshold with L-brackets, and have legs that rest on the ground or small footpads. They are not typically anchored into concrete or the ground itself, which is why they don't require a building permit — they are not permanent structures. However, they should be stable and not shift under use. Most manufacturers include detailed installation instructions and hardware. If installed on a sloped or uneven surface, adjustable-height legs allow leveling.
