Kitchen Accessibility Modifications

Accessible home modifications including lever handles and clearance space for wheelchair approach

Updated June 2025

The ADA Kitchen Standard (Adapted for Residential)

ADA commercial kitchen standards call for 34-inch maximum counter height (vs. standard 36-inch), knee clearance under work surfaces for wheelchair approach, 60-inch turning radius, and side-reach ranges of 15–48 inches from the floor. These dimensions are the baseline for residential accessible kitchen design.

Permits: What Triggers One

Most kitchen accessibility modifications do not require permits: lever faucets, pull-out shelves, installing a new refrigerator drawer, removing a base cabinet for knee clearance. Permits may be required for: plumbing modifications (moving the sink), electrical work (new circuits for appliances), structural changes (moving walls, altering load-bearing elements). A countertop lowering that requires cutting the existing countertop and cabinet structure typically does not require a permit in most jurisdictions, but confirm locally.
